TL;DR

Web3 is composed of public goods, but the current sustainability of public goods development faces many difficulties. After researching various sustainable solutions for public goods, we have proposed some sustainable solutions for public goods to help Web3 public goods achieve better sustainable development.

LXDAO is a DAO dedicated to supporting Public Goods sustainably. The idea for this paper emerged from the daily practice of LXDAO, and it is expected that a complete methodology can be extracted from this paper. This methodology will also be used to guide the development of LXDAO in the future.

Description

Background

Public goods are non-excludable and non-rivalrous resources that benefit society as a whole, with examples such as street, clean air, and streetlights. In the context of Web3, public goods encompass open-source software, protocols, and infrastructure that enable the decentralized web to thrive. Ensuring the sustainability of these public goods is essential for fostering innovation, collaboration, and equitable access to information and resources.

This paper aims to analyze existing solutions for sustaining Web3 public goods, examining their strengths and weaknesses in addressing challenges such as funding, governance, and incentives. Through this analysis, we will identify gaps and opportunities for improvement, paving the way for the development of novel solutions tailored to the unique requirements of the Web3 ecosystem.

We will delve into the importance of public goods in Web3, highlighting their role in promoting decentralization, fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders, and driving the adoption of decentralized technologies. Furthermore, we will propose a comprehensive solution that addresses the identified shortcomings and builds upon the strengths of existing approaches.

By exploring the current landscape of Web3 public goods and presenting a well-rounded solution, this paper aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on sustaining the growth and innovation of the decentralized web for the benefit of all participants.

Details

Idea discussion:

Discuss with the PlanckerDAO and Uncommons communities and industry experts (such as Vitalik) to determine the direction of the paper. The discussion will continue during the initial draft period and will last for 3 months.

Research and writing:

Complete the initial draft by researching existing public goods solutions, which is expected to take three months.

Paper promotion and optimization:

After the initial draft is completed, it will be promoted in the community and continuously optimized based on feedback from community members and experts. This process will last for 2-3 months until the final draft is completed.

Team Setting

  • 1 PM: Manage the research progress, research, and report to the community
  • 2 Committed Researchers: Good at research and Public Goods Analysis, committed time to the research
  • Unlimited flexible Researchers: Bounty tasks, advisers, etc

Technology Stack

In this project, there is no need to use the software development technology stack, but researchers are required to have a deeper understanding of open source and public goods.

Timeline

The writing of the paper is divided into two stages. In the first stage, a PM and multiple researchers (2 or 3) are required to focus on outputting the initial draft. In the second stage, based on the initial draft, community feedback will be continuously absorbed and the paper will be continuously optimized until the final draft is completed.

Stage1:

Complete the initial draft in 3 months.

Stage2:

Complete the final draft in 2-3 months.

Total:
5-6 months

Operation

Without a clear operating plan, operating personnel may be needed to help with grant applications and community promotion.

Budgets And Distribution

Stage1: (three months total: 27000 ~ 32400 U)

PM: 2400U/Month 60hours+

Researchers: 1800U/Month 60hours+, 2 or 3

Bounty: 3000U/Month

Stage2:(three months total: 22200 U)

PM: 2400U/Month 60hours+
Bounty: 5000U/Month

Total: 49200 ~ 54600U

LXDAO as the initiator of this project, I request 15000LXPU from LXDAO as seed funding to cover PM’s 6-month work.

We will also contact other organizations for getting more funds for the research, after obtaining the funds, we will create a multi-signature wallet to manage these funds. The records of each fund disbursement and the POW records of the participants will be made public in the community.

Revenue Distribution

This project will not pursue financial returns, but will produce a solution for a Web3 public good, thereby enhancing the influence of LXDAO and providing guidance for the future development of LXDAO.

Key Result

A paper: Sustaining Web3 Public Goods: Analysis and Solutions for a Decentralized Future

Missing the important keyword: sustain

a solution or solutions?

Also, as a proposal for LXDAO, I think you can also mention how this paper will affect LXDAO’s works. Like:

LXDAO is a DAO dedicated to supporting Public Goods sustainably. This paper serves as theoretical guidance for LXDAO’s operations and direction.

We can go ask experts’ advice as quickly as possible, no need to wait for the initial draft is done, just in case we are working in a bad direction.

Researcher

and we can add some Bounty tasks. So we can accept more buidlers into this program, they are free to join the meeting, discuss the content, and give feedback. But the main researchers should have enough time and motivation for this topic. Others are rewarded by contribution.

Domain knowledge? or Requirements? This isn’t a technical project, no need technology stack.

But we do need to add requirements for researchers.

The budget and allotted time for research is currently insufficient. The Project Manager’s rate is only 20U/hour, and the researcher can only dedicate five hours per week. This allows for only a couple of meetings or readings and doesn’t afford them the time to work intensively.

Importantly, there’s no need to mention LXP at this juncture; a discussion about stablecoins is sufficient. Nonetheless, expenditures from LXDAO might involve LXP.

In my view, the bulk of the work should be completed within approximately three months, in a focused and expedited manner. Subsequently, flexible arrangements like bounties could accommodate any revisions or updates from peer-review feedback.

Hence, I suggest raising the hourly rates, shortening the project timeline, and incorporating some buffers. As we progress, we could actively seek more funding and dynamically adjust our resources. If initial funds are limited, we can decrease the number of fixed-rate researchers, or even have some researchers volunteer their time if they are not concerned about remuneration. (or using LXP)

The Project Manager and principal researcher should receive adequate compensation to ensure they remain committed until the conclusion of the research. I recommend an hourly rate of around 40U/hour. Other researchers might receive 30U/hour, but those on fixed rates should commit to at least 60 hours per month. We could start with a flexible approach by keeping a record of research time.

My calculation might be:

PM: 2400U/Month 60+
Researchers: 1800U/Month 60+, 2 or 3
Bounty: 3000U/Month

The initial draft might be 3 months, which is 32400 (3 researchers) or 27000 (2 researchers). After that:

PM: 2400U/Month 60+
Bounty: 5000U/Month

The second stage might be 3 months, which is 22200. So in total, the estimated budgets are between 54600 and 49200 U.

The budget might be updated according to the funding and grants we get. If we received more grants, we can raise the hourly rates, but if we don’t have enough grants, we can use LXP if researchers accept.

Before this, you might need to tell the community how many tokens you are applying for from the LXDAO community. I think LXDAO should at least cover the PM’s budget, which is 14400 LXPU in 6 Months.

Great suggestion, some updates have already been made.

I think it’s very good, do you have some drafts or advance research results to show?

How about the original title: Sustaining Web3 Public Goods: Analysis and Solutions for a Decentralized Future ?

I would say:

  • 1 PM: Manage the research progress, research, and report to the community
  • 2 Committed Researchers: Good at research and Public Goods Analysis, committed time to the research
  • Unlimited flexible Researchers: Bounty tasks, advisers, etc

Also, you might need to indicate the requirements of being a researcher and your contact. We can interview candidates.

Complete the final draft in 2-3 months? and in total 6 months?

60+hour committed

You are requesting funds from LXDAO treasury, so it might be more precise:

LXDAO as the initiator of this project, I request 15000LXPU from LXDAO as seed funding to cover PM's 6-month work.

We will also contact other organizations for getting more funds for the research, and share xxxx

Also, you might need to mention that we will try other ways of getting funds, and how to manage those funds, etc.

Of course, we will release it after we organize it.

ok, the key point is Sustaining Web3 Public Goods, not sustainable solutions

A new version has been updated.

Idea from yeterday brainstorming:
maybe we can focus on details about the public good projects selection.
The experience about how LXDAO select projects to incubate?
What about the crypto or web 2.5 project?

Another angle is how to measure the value or potential of Public Goods rather than selecting a project to incubate.

We will try to focus on Web3 Native projects.
