A new idea on Funding Sustainability

Profit-First DAO Funding Framework:

Building a Sustainable Financial Circulation System for DAOs

:brain: Background & Motivation

Most DAOs today still rely on grants, donations, or one-off collaborations.
This creates two major problems:

  1. Funding is not sustainable — once the grant cycle ends, the DAO becomes passive.
  2. Incentives are inconsistent — contributors rarely receive rewards aligned with long-term value.

If we think of a DAO as a living economic organism, what it needs is not “more funding,” but a self-regulating, continuously generating financial circulation system.

:light_bulb: Core Idea: Profit First × DAO

The Profit First framework (from the book Profit First) proposes a counterintuitive rule:

Revenue − Profit = Expenses
Not “see what’s left,” but “reserve profit first, then constrain expenses.”

The deeper essence is:

  • Prioritize sustainability by pre-allocating funds into dedicated buckets.
  • Create financial discipline through structure, not after-the-fact decisions.
  • Turn “profit mindset” into a self-organizing operational mechanism.

:wrench: Applying Profit First to a DAO

Mapping Profit First into the DAO context results in this structure:

DAO Funding Element Profit First Analogy Purpose
DAO Treasury Revenue Account Incoming grants, fees, income
Sustainability Pool Profit Account Long-term growth & stability
Risk Buffer Pool Tax/Buffer Account Shock absorption & resilience
Operations Pool Opex Account Day-to-day incentives & operations
RetroPGF Pool Owners’ Pay Reward long-term contributors

:small_blue_diamond: On-chain Auto-Allocation (“Bucketing”)

Every time funds enter the treasury, a smart contract automatically allocates them:

receive() external payable {

uint256 sustainability = msg.value * 20 / 100;

uint256 buffer = msg.value * 10 / 100;

uint256 ops = msg.value * 50 / 100;

uint256 retro = msg.value * 20 / 100;

}

This is simply Profit First’s multi-account method executed trustlessly on-chain:
transparent, predictable, and governance-friendly.

:seedling: Why This Matters

The Profit First perspective is rare and valuable in DAO governance.

Most DAO financial models follow an “open-source / public goods” philosophy:

“We raise funds to support the ecosystem, not to generate profit.”

But this misses a fundamental question:

:red_exclamation_mark:How does a DAO stay alive long-term?

Your Profit First lens introduces missing pieces:

  • How a DAO transitions from survival → self-sustainability
  • How to avoid the classic “public goods tragedy”
  • How to make cash flow predictable, accountable, and regenerative

Three Layers of DAO Finance

Layer Traditional DAO Thinking Profit-First Additions
Top: Allocation Grants, RetroPGF, voting “Profit retention first” priority rules
Middle: Revenue Grants, donations Build stable, high-margin income streams
Bottom: Cashflow Mgmt Multisig wallets Structured financial buckets + auto-allocation

Conceptual Upgrade: Protocol Profit First

DAO revenue (NFT sales, protocol fees, partnerships) can automatically split into:

  • Operations Pool
  • Reserve Pool
  • Reinvestment Pool
  • Contributor Incentive Pool
  • Profit/Surplus Pool

In this model, sustainability is encoded at the protocol level, not manually decided.

:rocket: Expected Outputs

  1. 资金不可持续 —— 拨款周期一旦结束,DAO陷入被动;

:light_bulb: 核心理念:Profit First × DAO
• 通过**优先分配机制(先划分资金桶)**建立财务自律;
• 以资金透明与行为约束促成长期可持续;

:small_blue_diamond: 自动分桶(On-chain Bucketing)

receive() external payable {
uint256 sustainability = msg.value * 20 / 100;
uint256 buffer = msg.value * 10 / 100;
uint256 ops = msg.value * 50 / 100;
uint256 retro = msg.value * 20 / 100;
}

:potted_plant: 为什么这很重要(Why It Matters)

:gear: 「Protocol Profit First」的潜力方向
→ 自动分流到运营池、储备池、再投资池、激励池与分红池;
• 自律性(Discipline)—— 自动形成分配边界;
• 透明性(Transparency)—— 资金流可追踪、可验证;
• 韧性(Resilience)—— 在资金波动中持续运作;

(Funding Dashboard)
    o 可视化各资金池比例与健康度;
    o 支持DAO内部治理与外部展示。
(Smart Allocation Prototype)
(Funding Sustainability Research)
    o 借鉴Octant、Gitcoin、Optimism等DAO资金模式;
    o 形成“利润优先型DAO财务框架”。
(Behavioral Incentive Test)
    o 探索通过Profit Ratio调整激励分布;
    o 研究透明度、公平性与效率的平衡点。

Profit First 让企业学会了为利润留出空间;

Addition:
I’d like to introduce one more concept from Profit First that aligns extremely well with DAO treasury design: CAP / TAP.

  • CAP (Current Allocation Percentages) = how the DAO is actually allocating funds today.
  • TAP (Target Allocation Percentages) = how the DAO should allocate funds in its healthy, sustainable long-term state.

CAP shows our current reality and exposes structural issues (e.g., over-reliance on grants, lack of buffers).
TAP defines the ideal distribution — e.g., Sustainability Pool, Buffer Pool, Operations, RetroPGF, Reinvestment.

With on-chain auto-allocation (“bucketing”) mechanisms, the DAO doesn’t need to change overnight.
We simply move gradually from CAP → TAP over time.

Adding CAP/TAP complements the original proposal perfectly:
Profit-First gives us the structure (funding buckets),
while CAP/TAP gives us the path (how to evolve toward sustainability).
Together, they form a clear, measurable framework for building a self-regulating, transparent, and resilient DAO funding system.

补充:

Profit First 中的 CAP / TAP 概念:

**CAP(Current Allocation Percentages)**代表 DAO 当前真实的资金分配比例,
**TAP(Target Allocation Percentages)**则代表 DAO 希望达到的长期健康目标结构。

  • CAP = DAO
  • TAP = DAO
