EIPs Fun project idea and proposal

I know there is an official website for EIPs https://eips.ethereum.org/. Overall it’s concise and good, but it only has the EIP contents. So I think for developers or newbies, there is a lot of helpful content missing on this website, for example:

  • Explanation in PLAIN language for this EIP to quickly understand (and i18n)
  • More explanation articles and videos from the community related to it
  • Code repos and examples
  • Online products based on this EIP
  • Weekly newsletters for tracing the latest EIPs activities and letting more developers get involved!

This might be super helpful to bring more developers and applications into Web3.

Btw, this morning just saw Dan deployed a better document for EIP-712 because of the complains on the EIP-712, so I think this project going to be a good solution for all of the EIPs. https://twitter.com/danfinlay/status/1613329812231446536

New feature added after discussion (Bruce, Zik, Link, Hardman, and Nicholas Hu):

We can create EIP-based grant pools. Each EIP has a token pool for ecosystem support. Projects based on this EIP, people who like this EIP, and/or EIP authors could donate tokens into this pool. The EIP contributors can apply for grants to advance this EIP ecosystem. The output can be an article, a video, or a project.

We can buidl a DAO and smart contract for EIP grant pools. Ethereum OGs and EIP authors can verify their wallets and receive special NFTs for higher voting weight. Donors will also get governance tokens to approve the EIP grant applications.

This will be an essential way or tool for advancing EIP and Web3. And good addition to the public goods similar to GitCoin.

EIPs Fun Proposal

TL;DR

EIPs play a crucial role in Web3 Development, but navigating and understanding the official EIPs website (https://eips.ethereum.org/) can be challenging for developers (of course it’s concise). Although there is an abundance of informative articles, code examples, and videos about EIPs, the official website cannot include them.

Our project aims to uncover the potential of EIPs, making them more accessible and enjoyable for developers. We will design some tools and workflow for them. By doing so, we hope to advance the growth of the entire ecosystem.

Description

The significance of Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) in the development of Web3 cannot be overstated. We have all seen how Tokens (ERC-20) and NFTs (ERC-721, ERC-1155) have transformed the world and propelled the growth of Web3.

However, despite the importance of EIPs, there is still a large number of developers who face challenges in understanding and participating in the development of EIPs. The official website https://eips.ethereum.org/ provides limited information and resources, leaving a gap that needs to be filled by the COMMUNITY!

Our goal is to address the following issues:

  • To increase awareness and understanding of EIPs among developers and Web3 users, including how EIPs work, how to contribute, and how to use them
  • To provide a tool or newsletter to help developers keep track of the progress of EIPs and stay updated with the latest information and resources
  • To establish a Grants Pool for funding the advancement of EIPs, including supporting researchers, tech writers, authors, and startups based on EIPs

To achieve these goals, we propose the following solution:

  • Website: develop a comprehensive and user-friendly website, EIPs.fun, to provide a better learning experience for EIPs. The website will offer a wealth of resources and high-quality content to help readers quickly understand EIPs.
  • Newsletter: create a newsletter specifically for developers and researchers, covering updates on EIP status, new EIPs, learning resources, and projects related to EIPs. The newsletter will be sent out on a weekly basis and could also include daily automated newsletters that introduce random EIPs.
  • Grants Pool: establish a Grants Pool for funding the ecosystem of EIPs. This pool will be funded by donations from authors, fans, and successful projects based on the EIPs. Researchers, writers, and developers can then apply for grants from the pool to advance their work on EIPs.
  • Low-priority works like: Twitter bots, Discord bots, Chrome Web Extensions, etc.
  • Operations: Podcasts, Twitter Space, Content writing, etc.

Project Details

For a detailed prototype, please refer: https://www.figma.com/file/czwUjTpivIGIgYsI2UiQdu/Untitled?node-id=0%3A1&t=5wOjAAkddNzxXNnl-0

Website

  • Content will be based on GitHub and Markdown for ease of collaboration and version control
  • A well-designed home page with a search feature will be provided
  • Tutorials for EIPs will be available
  • Subscription to the newsletter will be offered
  • EIP detail page: Quick overview of the EIP, updates, related articles, videos, etc. and comments (based on GitHub issues), and access to the Grants Pool (where developers can apply for grants)

Newsletter

  • In-depth introduction to hot EIPs
  • Updates on EIPs
  • Updates on learning resources, grants, etc.
  • Products and advertisements related to EIPs or developers
  • Information on donations

Grants Pool

  • The pool will be based on a smart contract for EIPs
  • Donors can donate tokens to the Grants Pool using Donate3, which will be locked into the specific EIP’s Grants Pool
  • The creation of SBTs and governance tokens for the Grants Pool management, and a simple DAO for managing grant applications

Integration

  • Twitter bots will be used to post updates on EIPs automatically
  • Discord bots will also be integrated
  • A Chrome web extension will be developed to detect EIPs and provide more details

Operation

  • Content writers will be hired
  • Twitter space or podcasts will be used for EIP introductions and interviews with authors, to uncover the motivation and original design of the EIPs and inspire others
  • The newsletter will be regularly maintained.

Sustainability

What are the benefits and profits for this project’s sustainable design?

  • Donations from foundations, projects based on EIPs, individuals, etc.
  • Reputation, as we are a public good and driving the development of Web3.
  • Increase the recognition of the DAO through our media channel, reaching developers worldwide.
  • Advertising revenue from newsletters and websites.

Most of the revenue will be used to sustain this project and cover operational costs. Fortunately, by leveraging GitHub and open-source technology, we aim to automate processes and minimize operational costs as much as possible.

Team settings, Milestone, and Budgets

After we buidl a basic consensus for this project and design the prototype, discuss it later.

Key results

  • Successful completion of the project, including the website, tools, and other components
  • Effective functioning of the Grants Pool, fostering growth and development in the EIP ecosystem
  • Increased impact and recognition, measured by the number of followers, subscribers, and overall influence.

The official documentation of the EIP is too hard to read, too obscure to understand by reading the EIP, No example code to run directly, it would be great if there were examples of working source code, or better yet, more common reading material, suggest a wiki like project where the community can participate. And submit the sample code.
This is a very good idea。

awesome-EIP github repo basically

Brilliant idea!
We can build a loose group like Open Source team, follow a step to learn and build together.

Great pre-proposal, thank you Bruce! I have a few thoughts to discuss:

About Milestones

  • The project could have a major milestone split into two stages based on the establishment of the Grants Pool.
  • The primary focus of the first stage(before the establishment of Grants Pool) is to make EIPs more user-friendly and useful, and to facilitate effective interaction among contributors around EIPs, with the aim of building a community.
  • Without a community formed organically in the first stage, launching the Grants Pool may not be possible or may not be active even if launched.
  • The Grants Pool relies on the community formed by contributors around a particular EIP, also needs supports from the Ethereum core community.
  • The first stage is service-oriented, while the second stage focuses on legitimacy. For EIPs.fun, legitimacy may equate to publicness.

About Organization

  • The organizational structure of this organization should be decentralized.
  • Based on the fact that each EIP will form a community or some kind of subDAO, contribution records will be generated early on, and these contributors will have voting rights after the Grants Pool is established in the later stage.
  • The maintenance team should be decentralized, which may mean that the maintenance team is a type of public layer affair.
  • Adequate funding is necessary to support public layer affair.

GPT can be utilized to process more text-based content.

Providing functions is one dimension, while organizing contributors to offer functions is another crucial dimension.
